Now you can electronically file state tax returns for free

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - It's the dreaded tax time and the federal tax delay is causing some confusion.  However, the state has launched a new website to try and help you better understand and file free state income tax returns electronically.

The Massachusetts Department of Revenue launched a new web page called The Filing Zone that allows you to file your tax returns for free.

Many, though, are holding off on filing their taxes because of the federal tax delay.

The Fiscal Cliff forced the IRS to push back the date to January 30th but Massachusetts filers can start now.

“Massachusetts files separately from the federal forms, they have their own set of forms so their computers were all operational and ready to go they didn't have to wait for the IRS to complete their process for Massachusetts to start filing,” said Ray Maagero an area developer for Liberty Tax.

Still, the delay has some anxious because they rely on their refund check. “I've got two kids and I usually want to plan out the year and it's best with as much money as possible,” said Israel Millan of West Springfield.

For your federal refund, normally it takes between 8 and 15 days to see your check but this year the IRS says it may take up to 21 days.

Massachusetts officials say more than 3,200 people have used the webfile system since it open last Wednesday.

Despite this new resource, not everyone feels so confident filing online. “Honestly I'm afraid of making a mistake myself that's why I usually like having someone professional do it for me,” said Millan.

Whether you file paper or online, the IRS tax filing deadline is April 15th.
