NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - Opening arguments will begin this morning in a first of it's kind murder case.

It's the first time since Massachusetts legalized gay marriage that a woman has been charged with murdering her wife.

Cara Rintala is accused of murdering 37 year old Annamarie Cochran Rintala.

Annamarie was found dead in the basement of their Granby home in 2010.

Annamarie was a paramedic, Cara was a firefighter.

Prosecutors say the evidence against Cara, like two previous restraining orders and surveillance video of her throwing out bloody towels, is enough to have her convicted.

But Cara's lawyer, David Hoose isn't so sure.

He told 22News at one point there were two other women that Annamarie had relationships with and owned money to.

Cara's defense attorney says all the evidence against her will be explained during the trial.

Cara was eventually arrested in Rhode Island and brought back to Massachusetts.

The couple adopted a child together.

Cara Rintala has pleaded not guilty.

Opening arguments begin at 9-AM.
