Our dry weather could lead to problems

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - It's February and there's no snow on the ground in most places. After a little wet weather Wednesday night and Thursday morning the sun came out again and temperatures warmed up to around 50 degrees.

The nice weather has allowed people to get out and feed the ducks at the pond over at Forest Park, something that's usually hard to do this time of year because the ponds are typically frozen over.

It hasn't only been mild but it has also been very dry. So far this month we've seen less than a 1/2 inch of rain and no snow.

It wasn't that long ago that we were dealing with major flooding problems after Tropical Storm Irene that lasted for quite awhile.

But with the lack of rain and snow we've been seeing this winter now the rivers are running below normal.

All the area rivers in western Massachusetts are down below their banks and with a lack of snow up north right now flooding doesn't look to be a concern this spring but we could have other problems if things continue to stay so dry.

“Concerned that water level in reservoirs may be down or won't fill the normal type of way and just what's going to happen with the hydroelectric power. Are we going to have enough water for that?" said Elliott Stratton of Springfield.

“We could very well have drought problems. I haven't really considered that but, yeah and fires too now that you mention it,” said Kate Wright of Ludlow.

And we've already started seeing brush fires popping up across western Massachusetts.

Believe it or not, even though we don't have the snow here they are getting it in Hawaii. The peak of the highest mountain on the island is expected to pick up more than six inches of snow.
