Springfield, Mass (wwlp) - Springfield area Pit Bull owners argued today that their pets have a bad reputation.

The Dakin Humane Society in Springfield today observed national pit bull awareness day.
One Pit Bull owner told 22News, he's traced the history of how Pit Bulls got their reputation as vicious animals.

“It's hard to exactly tell when the myth started, back in the '80s and '70s, it was German shepherds, then It became pit bulls, it was more a status symbol they didn't want a companion animal, that's when we really saw poor ownership take over the breed”

The Dakin Humane Society's Candy Lash told 22News no dog is more misunderstood, mistreated or maligned than Pit Bulls.
