Planned casino summit cancelled by Morse
Had sought meeting with local leaders on issue

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Holyoke is out of the casino mix, and on Monday, Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse cancelled a regional casino meeting that he had planned.
The mayor’s executive assistant told 22News that instead of holding the meeting, they are now going to try to work with the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission.
PVPC Executive Director Tim Brennan told 22News they have talked with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission several times already. .
"The time to begin the discussion is right away. It's not five months from now, it's not six months from now. It's really now, because the beneficial effects are maximized if you start early," Brennan said.
The conversation is based around how to avoid or minimize traffic, as well as public safety and environmental impacts in surrounding communities.
Wherever the casino ends up, any casino developer in western Massachusetts will have to have an agreement with all of its surrounding communities.
Brennan told 22News that a member of the state Gaming Commission staff will be in Springfield on January 17 to answer any questions.
