SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - 22News is reminding you on Tuesday, Septmeber 20th, about the dangers of texting while driving with the "XtheTXT" campaign.
Winfield Jordan Sr. of Bloomfield, Connecticut says texting takes your attention off driving.
Plain and simple, that’s why 34 states have banned texting while driving that includes Massachusetts.
Now, 22News and other business partners are encouraging all drivers in Western Massachusetts to get one of these, an x the text thumb band.
This red thumb band is a visual reminder for drivers not to text behind the wheel.
Nine states, including our neighbor Connecticut, prohibit cell phone use of any kind behind the wheel.
“If you want to use the phone for that stop, pull aside and do it,” said Jordan.
Drivers caught texting in Massachusetts while driving could face fines ranging from $100 for a first offense and up to $500 for repeat offenses.
“I feel like I have to pay way more attention than I should driving. My cell phone even if it rings I don't even answer when I'm driving,” said John Yagmin of Springfield.
Peter Liptak of Westfield says he feels like people who text while driving endanger his life on the daily basis.” In a way it makes you more aware. You really have to watch out,” said Liptak.
The 22News "XtheTXT" campaign is sponsored by Jerry Rome Nissan, Interstate Towing, Country Bank and O'Connell's Convenience Plus.
