CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - A police officer was accidentally shot during a SWAT team training exercise in a vacant housing area near Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee, the city’s mayor says.

Mayor Michael Bissonnette told 22News that the officer was brought to Baystate Medical Center for his injuries, which are said to be serious, though the officer is expected to recover. He is being admitted to the hospital for further treatment.

Bissonnette says that the matter is being investigated by the Chicopee Police Department and the State Police.

No additional information about the officer’s injuries was immediately available.

Police Chief Thomas Charette is expected to make a statement about the situation on Tuesday.
