Postal service announces no mail on Saturdays

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The US Postal Service announced their plan to stop delivering mail on Saturdays, an effort which could save them 2 billion dollars every year.

Say so long to Saturday mail deliveries. As of August, they'll be a thing of the past.

The growth of email and other online services has taken quite a toll on the post office. As first class delivery dwindles, the post office has been losing up to 25 million dollars every day.

Package deliveries will continue six days a week; that service has increased by 14 percent since 2010. But just cutting down on one day of mail deliveries could save 2 billion dollars every year. And some people told 22News they'll hardly notice an empty mailbox all weekend.

“We send mail to our grandchildren so that's probably three times a year and sometimes buy stamps there. I have a really nice mail man. I'll miss seeing him, but we mostly get junk mail on Saturday,” said Linda Hauk of Westfield.

“Once I figured out how to use electronic bill pay it was all over. Now I get irritated if I have to send something in the mail,” said Brain Cahillane of South Hadley.

Not everyone has traded in their stamps for an email address. But even those who regularly visit the post office understand the change.

“We've got to take that step in the right direction to somehow save some money. The way the finances of our country are going,” said Joe Majkut of Westfield.

Post offices that are currently open Saturdays will remain open that day, so mail to post office boxes will still be delivered.
