Preparing for Daylight Saving Time

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - It's that time of year again, Daylight Saving Time.

Tomorrow morning it's going to be much brighter at this hour, but the sun's going to set a lot earlier, at 4:40 p.m.

We are changing our clocks tonight as Daylight Saving Time ends.

Most people will set their clocks back one hour before we go to bed.

And as you do that, it's also a good time to change the batteries in our smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

The State Fire Marshall says winter is when more deadly fires occur in our homes, where we feel the safest, and making sure your smoke alarms is the most effective way to make sure your family is safe.

When you change the batteries, also inspect the alarms and check the date.

All electronic devices have a limited life span.

Smoke alarms need to be replaced every ten years.

Carbon monoxide alarms need to be replaced every five or seven years, depending on the manufacturer.

If you can't tell how old those alarms are, it is time to replace them.

Daylight Saving Time returns the second Sunday in March, 2013.
