Price of fish to rise sharply soon

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - If you're someone who enjoys seafood, prepare to dish out even more for it.

New England fishermen will suffer another blow within the next few months when the number of fish they can catch is cut once again . Some of the most popular varieties of fish, including haddock and cod, are included in the catch limits.

Even though most fish sold in the United States is imported from other countries, here in New England, a lot of restaurants and stores buy locally. So a shorter supply of available fish will mean a rise in price.

“Once the demand is there, the price just keeps going up until people stop buying. If they continue to buy, the price stays high,” said Mike Fitzgerald, owner of Schermerhorn’s Seafood in Holyoke.

Fitzgerald told 22News that these cuts will change the fishing industry as we know it, and he expects that a lot of fishermen will leave the business.
