HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - Promoting healthy eating for people getting government assistance.
The Holyoke Farmers' Market hosted an event to highlight the Healthy Incentives Pilot Program. The program encourages SNAP users to buy fruits and vegetables. SNAP used to be known as the Food Stamp Program. Every dollar a SNAP user spends on fruits and veggies, they get 30 cents put back on their balance. The program is available in Hampden County.
"They are coming into places like our farmer markets and into our retailers to try to put the best food possible for their children. It's about having a healthy diet for your family", says Department of Transitional Assistance Commissioner Dan Curley.
Commissioner Curley is a Springfield native and a High School of Commerce graduate.
