SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Rock 102 radio personality John O'Brien is hoping to raise awareness about skin cancer as he battles stage three melanoma.

O'Brien, co-host of the popular morning drive program “Bax & O’Brien” told 22News that he found a lump on his back, which turned out to be cancerous. Since then, he has undergone surgery and is looking into further treatment, but his doctors say the outlook is positive.

“What we found is that in his case, his melanoma did spread into the lymph nodes and that prompted another surgery, but in that course, we did determine that there were no other areas of spread so that's very promising,” said Dr. Richard Arenas, Chief of Surgical Oncology at Baystate Medical Center.

O’Brien told 22News that having melanoma really makes you consider your exposure to the sun; even your exposure to indirect sunlight. "It makes you think about it when you didn't before. You used to just go out and not even think about it,” O’Brien said.

O'Brien is currently in the hospital from complications due to his surgery. He says that he is expected to be home and back on the air sometime this week.
