Rain in the forecast may be a concern with all the snow

A wintry mix and rain is forecast for Monday

AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) - Snow blowers continued the cleanup work which started on Saturday, before the next round of winter weather.

"I've been out in my driveway since eight o'clock this morning trying to clear that up. But yes you really have to attack it today. Because after tomorrow, that freezing rain is going to put a crust on the snow that will make it impossible to get through it,” said Bob Lloyd of Feeding Hills.

The possibility for rain, sleet and freezing rain on top of our already deep layer of snow could make for a very heavy wet snow, bringing more problems.

The weight of the snow not only makes it harder to clear, but it could also provide some additional weight on the roof. Especially the roofs that are flatter on top.

This additional weight brings concerns reminiscent of the winter we had two years ago.

"Issues with the collapsing of the roof, or water leakage coming in. The snow is going to be really heavy and scary so you don't want to damage anything that you have at home," said Regina Frydryk of Feeding Hills.

For many people that meant having to buy a roof rake at Rocky's Ace Hardware in Agawam.

"Seems like sometimes I say "oh I made it through without a roof rake and we're not going to get one of those storms again," but it seems like we get them every year so I might as well put in the investment now," said Daniel Frydryk of Feeding Hills.

But when dealing with roof cleaning, it's important to buy the appropriate tools, or risk permanent damage.

"You could damage the shingles and then get leakage so you want to make sure you use a roof rake and not just be up there chopping with anything," said Tammy Saloomey-Tavernia of Rockys Ace Hardware.

Roof rakes and roof pellets will also help prevent ice dams forming and damaging your roof.
