SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Shawn Bryan's estranged girlfriend Charlene Mitchell was one of the victims of Monday's shooting.

A little more than an hour before police say Mitchell was shot Monday afternoon, she filed a restraining order at the Springfield District Court against Shawn Bryan; the father of her 1-year-old child. In the affidavit she says Bryan, had a history of being violent.

Police say Bryan shot and killed Springfield Police Officer Kevin Ambrose, while the 36-year-veteran was responding to a domestic dispute call Monday afternoon at the Lawton Arms apartment complex.

Mitchell's family was seen Tuesday afternoon taking away what looked like Mitchell’s daughter's belongings. They asked the media to respect their privacy and refrained from comment.

Desiree Romero, one of Mitchell's neighbors, told 22News Mitchell's aunt came down her apartment after the shooting. “When I opened the door, she was crying she said can you please call the cops, can you please call the cops? There is a police officer who just got shot and my niece and her daughter is in the apartment,” said  Romero, who lives in the apartment complex.

And the unpredictable nature of domestic dispute calls is something Trooper John Vasquez knows first hand. Vasquez was shot in the hand and leg during while responding to a domestic dispute call on April 13th in Chicopee.

“With what happened yesterday, you never know, he requested back up and back up was on route for him unfortunately, he was alone, he didn't have any help there with him, it might have turned out differently,” said Vasquez after being awarded the Medal of Valor Tuesday morning.

Mitchell was taken to Baystate Medical Center before being transferred to UMass Memorial in Worcester where she is in stable condition.
