SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Illegal immigrants living in the US might have a chance at citizenship, if they follow some instructions. It's part of President Obama's immigration reform plan he talked about in Las Vegas Tuesday.
There are 11 million undocumented people living in the US. But under President Obama's immigration reform plan, they could soon be on their way to becoming American citizens. They'd have to meet some guidelines first: pass background checks, pay back taxes and fines, and learn English.
Some people told 22news if illegal immigrants didn't follow the rules in the first place, they shouldn't be rewarded with a path to citizenship.
“I think we have a lot of people here that our country is left to take care of. If they didn't follow them to start, than no,” said Ethel Wright of Springfield.
Others argue that goes against the basic principles on which America was built.
“I think they should be allowed to stay. Everybody is welcome here. That was the purpose of forming America. We're all citizens of the world so why not help people who need jobs here?” said Stephanie Forgette of Easthampton.
“Yeah I believe they should stay. They can provide for our country and add to our economy. Most immigrants who come to this country come to work,” said Carlos Lopez.
And what about future immigrants who have their eyes set on a life in the US? The only way conservatives will climb on board with the plan is if security bulks up at the borders.
