ENFIELD, Conn. (WWLP) - If you smelled smoke Thursday morning, most likely it was due to a fire at Enfield's landfill.

Enfield fire Captain Don Ellis told 22News that mulch and brush caught fire at the landfill at 100 Ecology Drive just before 12:30 A.M.

It was initially reported that the fire was a controlled burn, but that is not the case.

The landfill is located in the southern part of town, near the East Windsor line, but the smell of the smoke carried as far north as Holyoke.

Deputy Chief Paul Januscewski told 22News that they have the fire under control, but it may continue to burn through Friday morning.
