Little River Road re-opened after wires fell on car

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Little River Road in Westfield has re-opened to traffic after wires fell on a car and started a fire.

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Devine told 22News that the car was parked in a driveway, and that no one was inside. There were no injuries.

On Westfield Gas and Electric's Facebook page , they posted that the fire was caused by a tree limb on a wire.

Following the incident, Westfield police blocked off the roadway between the intersections of Little River Road and Route 20 and Little River Road and Shaker Road. Traffic has since been allowed to pass through.

A picture sent to 22News via Report It showed heavy smoke following the incident, and a witness in the area told 22News that she heard a loud explosion.

“I was taking a shower, and all of a sudden, I was coming out of the bathroom, and I heard a BOOM, just like an explosion! I looked in the house, I thought something exploded in the house,” Little River Road resident Mary Vassallo said.

“It even scared the dog, the dog even got scared. So I looked around and nothing happened, when all of a sudden I heard fire engines coming, I didn’t know what happened, I thought something had exploded in the house!”

Power was out along Little River Road and Ridgecrest Drive for hours, and the traffic light being out caused police to have to direct traffic at the busy intersection of Little River Rd. and Route 20. Electricity has since been restored.
