SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield police detectives are trying to figure out who broke into the Carew Street Dave’s Soda and Pet Food City store, and stole five snakes and two geckos.

Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News that before 3:30 Saturday morning, someone had broken through a window on the side of the store. The thief or thieves then allegedly took two laptop computers and several aquarium filters, as well as the seven reptiles:

1 pastel boa constrictor
1 carpet python
1 Kenyon Sand boa
1 corn snake
1 albino corn snake
1 leopard gecko
1 female adult leopard gecko

Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney said the animals might be sold on the black market.

It's a heart breaking loss for employees.

"It's rough, you care for them, feed them, come in and it's just rough.  We like to sell animals because that's what we are, a pet store, but we care for them as well." said Johnny Lzquierdo.

Conveniently, the thief or thieves did not take any of the larger snakes or the scorpions.

If you have any information, you are asked to call Springfield Police Detectives Michael Carney and Gifford Jenkins at (413) 787-6355.
