Agawam, Mass. (WWLP) - Whether you're cooking for your family or a restaurant full of customers, the rising cost of produce is taking a toll.
Frankie DiBenedetto is the owner of the Take Five Restaurant in Agawam.
He told 22News, “Right now, romaine and all the different kinds of lettuces, broccoli and spinach prices have tripled."
This time of the year, the price of produce always jumps in our area because fruits and vegetables have to be imported.
This year, a cold snap on the west coast left some veggies in short supply, driving prices up even more.
DiBenedetto explained, "Soups, the salad bar and the rest of the entrees all get served with some kind of vegetables so the increase really affects us."
It's an added cost the owners of Take Five in Agawam can't avoid and it cuts into their profits.
However, many who eat at home often skip produce and other fresh foods because of the cost.
Still, 22news found several shoppers who say it is possible if you plan ahead.
Amanda Mitchell of West Springfield said, “"I think if you do shop around there are a lot of Asian markets in West Springfield, Springfield and Northampton where you can find a lot of produce for really cheap."
Michael Marsili of Agawam told 22News, “Shopping during the week and buying fruits and veggies, hummus and tuna and thing that I can make during the week to cut down on the cost."
