South Hadley residents voice complaints about landfill

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) - South Hadley’s board of health Wednesday night heard neighbors and businessmen complain about the noise, the smell, the traffic and now vermin at the South Hadley landfill.

The board's considering possible health code violations at the landfill, which it may expand so it can charge out-of-town and out-of-state communities that want to dump their garbage here.

Ted Curtain, of Repworks Security Company, told 22News he brings hundreds of people in every year, but he might be forced to leave town. "And we're getting more and more comments from them recently about the smell, the odors, and complaints. And we've been thinking about maybe we have to move our business. Been there for 20 years, and I like the location, but its becoming way objectionable."

According to attorney Victor Anop, who represents the landfill neighbors in South Hadley, "We think the board of health should move to enforce the laws that it has control over, including complaints tonight about rats, mice, and snakes around the compost pile. This is just getting worse."

The board of health may recommend revoking permits for trucks carrying over-limit loads or dumping illegally.

Their next meeting is set for January 2nd of next year.
