Expanded landfill boundaries approved in South Hadley

S. Hadley Conservation Comm. approval conditional

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) - South Hadley residents still haven't gotten the answers they're seeking about the proposed expansion of the town landfill.

The South Hadley Conservation Commission Wednesday night voted unanimously to accept new proposed boundaries for the landfill.

No action will actually be taken, though, until after the  town meeting October 29th.

A group of citizens is concerned about the smell and the possible loss of dozens of acres of conservation land.

"Where exactly is the dump going to expand to? And how is that going to affect all of the open land and conservation land that was paid for with state monies. That answer wasn't given tonight," said Victor Anop, attorney for the group, "SHAME," an acronym for South Hadley Against More Expansion.

Attorney Anop said his group is concerned the new boundaries for the South Hadley landfill will result in the loss of conservation land used for recreation, and the loss of habitat for an endangered species of moth.

Anop told 22News he's awaiting resolution of a complaint he's filed against the town, alleging violation of the state's Open Meeting Law.  he claims his group has been denied an opportunity to speak publicly during an open forum.
