Springfield gas explosion damage claims

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Columbia Gas is still taking claims from people who were affected by Friday night's blast in Springfield, after a worker accidentally hit a gas line.

Columbia Gas has extended their stay at City Hall, so they can take damage claims from anyone who was affected by Friday's explosion on Worthington Street. The company has also setup a dedicated hotline.

If you were affected by the blast, and still need to file a damage claim, it's important to keep this in mind that once you make a claim with the gas company, you may not file an additional insurance claim. Bill Trudeau of the Insurance Center of New England says the best reimbursement option, will vary by situation. "Of course with the insurance option you have a deductible. But you're a customer of the insurance company, so they have a coverage policy that's ironed out and ready to go", said Trudeau.

Columbia Gas will continue taking claims in room 220 at Springfield City Hall on Tuesday, from 10 AM to 5 PM. There's also a toll-free number residents and businesses can call with any questions: (800) 451-4527. It will be answered by a claims representative, Monday through Friday, from 8 AM to 9 PM.

Columbia Gas expects that at least 200 people will file claims.

Meantime, Governor Patrick said he will not be changing any regulations or looking for new laws, in regards to the Springfield explosion. He said, because of the fact that the blast was caused by human error, there's only so much that regulations or laws can do to prevent such an incident.
