School Committee wants to hear from parents

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Springfield School Committee held a meeting this evening to ask the public, what they would like to see in a new superintendent.

Current superintendent Dr. Alan Ingram announced his resignation last summer, so he will be leaving at the end of this school year.

Norman Roldan of the Springfield School Committee told 22News that the first step in finding a new superintendent is asking the parents for their thoughts.

Roldan said, “I think what we need to do is make sure that the next person on board cares about the education system, cares about our kids, cares about the parents.”

One parent whose son will start preschool soon told 22News that she wants someone who truly cares about the community.

Liz Wills-O’Gilvie of Springfield said, “I want somebody to buy a house in this community. We pay taxes in Springfield so that's very different than renting an apartment here. I'm vested in this city and we need a superintendent who's going to be that vested because you get some of our problems when you are.”

The School Committee is asking parents to fill out a survey, available in both English and Spanish.

The committee will then form a search committee, which will include students and parents, to continue this process.
