SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield Public Schools have launched a new plan to close the achievement gap for students.

If they haven't already, teachers from four elementary schools will be visiting their students' homes in an effort increase parental involvement and help bridge the gap between school and home.

Sumner Avenue School kindergarten teacher, Marguerite Foster Franklin, told 22News, "it's gives an opportunity for the Springfield Public School system to learn more about the families, find out more about the family needs, not only just educationally but emotionally, and physically."

The four schools selected include:

  • Edward P. Boland Elementary School
  • William N. DeBerry Elementary School
  • Hiram L Dorman Elementary School
  • Sumner Avenue Elementary School

Each school that is participating in the initiative has also been awarded $25,000 to help fund the work.
