SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The city of Springfield has begun demolishing several properties damaged by last year's tornadoes.

The six properties in the city's Maple High/Six Corners neighborhood are a combination of city-owned, tax foreclosed, and privately owned properties.

The city will be fronting the more than $380,000 needed to cover the demolitions.

FEMA had initially denied funding the demolitions.  The city is appealing that decision.
