SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The longtime president of Springfield College has announced that he will retire this summer.

Richard B. Flynn announced on Tuesday that he would leave the job he has held for the last 14 years on August 31.

“My time at Springfield College truly has been a labor of love and the highlight of my professional career,” Flynn said in a statement sent to 22News.

During his time at Springfield College, Flynn oversaw expansion of the college and increased efforts to integrate the campus with the wider community of the city. Though he was originally supposed to retire back in 2011, he stayed on to lead the college after the campus suffered damage from the June 1 tornado and the October Nor’Easter.

Douglas Couppe, Chair of the Springfield College Board of Trustees, says that Flynn has agreed to work with the board to ensure a smooth transition for the next president of the college.
