SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - One of the two men charged in connection with the slaying of a popular student at a Chicopee high school has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter.
Mark Melendez of Springfield was sentenced yesterday to a maximum of seven years in prison for his role in the March 2011 fatal shooting of 16-year-old Kevin Gomez .
Gomez was an academic star and a member of the football and basketball teams at Chicopee Comprehensive High School.
According to The Republican, prosecutors said in court that the 20-year-old Melendez brought a gun to a birthday party that was used to kill Gomez. Gomez was shot in the back after breaking up a fight involving Melendez.
The man accused of pulling the trigger is awaiting trial on a murder charge.
