SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A Springfield elementary school was evacuated late Wednesday morning due after the odor of gas was detected in the building.

Dennis Leger, aide to the Springfield Fire Commissioner, told 22News that the department was called just before 11:00 A.M. after the gas smell was detected at the Sumner Avenue Elementary School.

The building was evacuated, and students were moved to the nearby Trinity Church.

Workers closely went over the school's entire heating system, and Leger says that a small gas leak was found in one of the furnaces.

Azell Cavaan, spokesperson for the Springfield Public Schools, told 22News that students were allowed back inside the building just before 12:30 when everything was determined to be safe.
