BOSTON (WWLP) - Walmart plans to install solar power generators on 27 stores across the state, including its store in Springfield.
The project will generate more than 10 megawatts of power and is a step toward the company’s goal of relying 100% on renewable energy. Patrick Administration officials praised the announcement for bringing the Commonwealth closer to its goal of generating 250 megawatts of power by 2017. Massachusetts currently generates almost 100 megawatts, up from 4 megawatts in 2007
“People will make the smart, renewable, energy-efficient decisions that at the same time are good for their bottom lines financially, but also good for the environment,” said Richard Sullivan, Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs.
Of course, wherever Walmart goes, strong opinion follows, including members of the Making Change at Walmart campaign. While campaigners were pleased with the solar energy announcement, they said the company should not overlook the treatment of its staff.
“We also wanted to make sure that people hear the other side of the story. They have a tremendous opportunity to be a better company, you know, to have different and better business practices,” said Edwin Argueta of Making Change at Walmart.
They called on Walmart to provide better health benefits and salaries to their workers, and to become more transparent about their financial contributions.
