SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Holyoke wasn't the only community to crown a Colleen Saturday night. The Springfield St. Patrick's Parade Committee held their annual coronation ball at the Cedars on Island Pond Road.

22News asked this year's Colleen why her Irish heritage is so important to her.

“I grew up going to my grandma's house and she would tell me stories about what it was like growing up as the daughter of Irish immigrants,” said Mary Kate Sullivan. “And stories her mother told her about her journey to America. I just can't believe it. And my favorite tradition is baking Irish bread using the recipe first given by my great-grandmother.”

She told 22News it's an honor to be named the Colleen among so many other talented young women.
