(WWLP) - Staycation or vacation?  It's the unofficial end of summer.  If you're trying to squeeze one more trip in, you may have to contend with bumper to bumper traffic.

The heaviest traffic heading west on the Mass Pike this holiday weekend was Thursday and Friday.  But according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation you can expect more backups Monday afternoon and Monday night if you're heading East on the Pike.

AAA says more than 1.6 million people in New England will be driving 100 miles or more this weekend. You won't have to worry about construction, MassDOT suspends on road and bridge projects from today until Tuesday morning.  Samuel Perez from Springfield told 22News family is the biggest factor when deciding between a staycation or vacation.

"It should be their decision, either they have family here or they have family in another state, whichever decision they want to make, either stay or go", says Perez.

If you do go and you're heading back late Monday, you can get free coffee at all the service plazas on the Pike from 10pm on Monday until Tuesday morning at 5am.

Before hitting the road you can checkout MassDOT's statewide live traffic cameras.
