Attacker in 9/21 incident still a mystery

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Chicopee Police still need your help in finding a man who brutally attacked a woman who was opening a Willimansett restaurant and bar on September 21st.

This is surveillance footage of the man Chicopee Police believe brutally bludgeoned a 57-year-old woman with the blunt end of an ax, as he attempted to rob the Dugout cafe. Detectives are looking for a white man, about 5'8'', who weighs around 175 to 180 pounds.

More than two weeks later, that man's identity is still a mystery. And it's scary for people who live and work in the Willimansett section of Chicopee.

“That's horrible. Absolutely horrible. I have two children. We were actually going to move right next door. I'm so thankful I didn't. It makes me nervous every day. Anywhere. It can happen anywhere, but not usually daytime,” said Melissa Paradysz.

“Middle of the day is the most disturbing part. You have things that happen at night, you expect those things to happen at night but during the day,” said George Fotopoulos.

One woman who lives nearby told 22News her own son was once jumped just right across the street from the Dugout as he was heading into a store.

“I think it's disgusting. It's scary, really scary. I raised kids here years ago and it was great. Now it's getting really bad. For somebody to go in there and hit somebody over the head like that. She could have died,” said Tina Mahoney.

If you have any information, you are asked to call the Chicopee Police Detective Bureau at 594-1733, and if you prefer you may remain anonymous.
