HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - What could have been a serious New Year's Day incident has been labeled a minor inconvenience.

Lucien Hronowski, the manager of a five-story apartment building at 50 West Street, credits the fire department's quick response with preventing flooding of his building Tuesday morning.

"Vandals broke into a vacant upper floor apartment and removed the cap to the new water pipes,” Hronowski said.

"The firefighters capped the water within a half hour after the water started cascading down in the bathrooms of the apartments below,” he added.

No one had to be evacuated, and his company, Windsor Realty, is now assessing the amount of damage.

Hronowski urged people on this start of the new year, to report anything they notice that might be illegal.
