Storm was one for the record books

Snowfall over 20" in many areas

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The storm was worse than most other Western Massachusetts storms in many ways.

Even for a hearty New Englander like Clayton Jedziniak, the storm packed a punch.

“Heavy, crazy, nuts, as you can see we've had two plows and a bucket loader and we still can't get it done,” Jedziniak told 22News.

But it wasn't just any normal winter storm.

22News Storm Team Meteorologist Brian Lapis explained,” That widespread of large snowfall is certainly a historic storm and in many respects this was almost like a winter hurricane.”

Wind gusts in Western Massachusetts were around 50 miles per hour.

And snow blanketed a massive region.

But was it the worst we've ever seen?

“The blizzard of 78, almost compares, almost the same,” Cindy Czerwiecki of Chicopee told 22News.

In reality, this storm was worse, with snowfall totals over 20 inches in many areas.

Far surpassing the 14 and a half inches that came down in 1978.

But today, our snow plowing technology has improved, which allows for a quicker recovery.

Although, that still doesn't mean we didn't get stuck in it.

One Western Mass. resident told 22News, “It's been a 24 hour ordeal, I've been shoveling and trying to keep up with it, but at 2 o’clock in the morning it was just coming down.”

Another problem with this storm was the wind which caused the snow to drift and accumulate several feet in some areas.

But even with the drift and record setting snowfall totals, it's just another winter.

It will be a while until everyone has dug their way out.
