SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A Springfield strip club doorman had to be rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after police say he was repeatedly punched in the eye by a man wearing brass knuckles.
Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News that two men, Elvin and Juan Bastaldo, both of Springfield, face several charges following the incident outside the Mardi Gras early Sunday morning.
According to Delaney, the two had been trying to get an 18 year-old woman into the club right around closing time, but the doorman wouldn’t allow them inside. Both men also refused to pay the cover to enter.
Two police officers who were working a detail at the Taylor Street strip club told the three that they had to leave, but as the doorman was escorting a dancer out of the club, Juan Bastaldo allegedly attacked.
Delaney says the 24 year-old sucker-punched the doorman, and he then struggled with police as they were trying to arrest him. One of the two officers suffered a leg injury and is now temporarily off-the-job.
As this was going on, Delaney says Elvin Bastaldo, who was wearing brass knuckles, came up from behind the doorman, and then repeatedly punched him in the left eye.
More officers were called-in to help, and after a short foot chase, Elvin Bastaldo was arrested.
The doorman, a 34 year-old, was taken to the emergency room at Mercy Medical Center, but then was rushed to Mass General in an attempt to save his eye. There is no word on his condition at this time.
Elvin Bastaldo is charged with mayhem, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery with serious bodily injury, and being a disorderly person.
Juan Bastaldo is charged with assault and battery, resisting arrest, and being a disorderly person.
Both men are being held in advance of their arraignment Tuesday in Springfield District Court.
