SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Students at Kiley Middle School in Springfield are back in their classrooms Monday, for the first time since the tragic death of one of their classmates. Superintendent Daniel Warwick told 22News that counseling services are being made available to students at the school.

Just 10 days ago, 12 year-old Marlon Brown drowned in the school's swimming pool during gym class. He was a sixth grader at Kiley.

Superintendent Warwick said the state found that the school was operating within the guidelines for swim programs. He also told 22News that the school is fully cooperating with the investigation into the boy's tragic death, which has since been handed over to the District Attorney's office .

All pool-related activities have been suspended at all of the Springfield Public Schools until further notice.

In response to what happened at Kiley, Springfield City Councilor James Ferrera is holding a news conference at 2:00 PM, inside the City Council Chambers to announce the formation of a School Safety Committee.

In the meantime, Marlon's family and friends are preparing to say goodbye to the sixth grader. Calling hours will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM Tuesday at the Wesley United Methodist Church located at 741 State Street in Springfield, followed by a Service of Thanksgiving. The funeral procession will then head to Hillcrest Park Cemetery on Parker Street for the burial
