SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A man has been arrested and charged with arson and attempted murder after the Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad determined a Rosewell Street house fire had been set.
Aide to the Springfield Fire Commissioner Dennis Leger told 22News, "The Arson and Bomb Squad determined that it was a set fire. They ruled out accidental as a cause."
Springfield Police Captain William Collins told 22News that police arrested 23 year old Tory Bryant and charged him with arson of a dwelling, three counts of attempted murder, and assault and battery.
Captain Collins told 22News Bryant had been staying in the basement at his mother's home at 286 Rosewell Street.
Captain Collins said, "He was physically disciplining his 5 year old child when the mother intervened. There was an argument. Bryant went into the cellar and then left the house, after which they realized there was a fire in the basement."
The fire started in the basement of the Pine Point home around 5:30 Wednesday night.
Bryant's mother and two children were in the house at the time of the fire. No one was hurt. Leger said the Red Cross was assisting those left homeless by the fire.
