SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Employers who hire military veterans could be eligible for an expanded tax credit.
The Work Opportunity Tax Credit gives thousands of dollars to qualifying businesses who hire veterans, but the veteran has to begin work before the new year.
There's no job more American than serving your country; but once that service is over, many veterans struggle to find a civilian job in the country they defended.
“I've heard a lot about the trouble they have reintegrating into civilian life. I think we could do more whether its jobs or tax credits or help with psychological counseling,” said Quentin Lauradunn of Concord, NH.
A tax credit in the "VOW to Hire Heroes Act" strives to support veterans by giving businesses incentive to hire them. One Springfield woman told 22News her brother served in the Navy for 25 years and is now back in school struggling to support his family of eight.
“Not really having the years he spent in the navy from the time he was 18 years old, now he's in his 40s just trying to get reestablished,” said Karla Mitchell.
Another woman told 22News she hopes resources like the Work Opportunity Tax Credit make veterans more comfortable seeking the help they need and deserve.
“There's things out there for them but they don't always know what's out there and a lot of times they don't think they should look for it because they're too tough or whatever. To just not be a tough guy and just get the help you need to go on and have a happy life,” said Laurie Moore of New Hampshire.
The maximum tax credit is $9,600 per worker for employers that operate for-profit businesses. Employers who hire veterans with service-related disabilities may be eligible for the maximum tax credit.
