SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - More than a third of Americans are finding a way to see their family and friends this holiday, and they won't let high gas and airfare prices stand in the way.
Wednesday is expected to be the busiest travel day of the year.
According to AAA, over 43 million people are expected to travel 50 miles or more this holiday weekend--90% will travel by car.
Since many of you have a half-day at work or school--or have the day-off altogether--experts recommend that you should get a jumpstart on your travel plans. But if you wait until the peak hours to travel, be prepared to face heavy traffic. To avoid the worst of this holiday traffic, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation suggests leaving either early in the morning, or after 8 PM.
Sunday is also expected to be another busy travel day, so make sure to plan accordingly when returning home and expect some delays.
If you plan on flying this holiday, make sure you get to the airport 90 minutes before your flight. It's also a good idea to check-in online, if you can, to expedite the process.
22News will continue to update you throughout the holiday weekend on travel conditions. You can also look at how traffic is moving via the Mass. DOT and Connecticut DOT traffic cameras.
