CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - If the snow weren't enough, today's rain on top of Saturday’s snow was just what we didn't need.
While we don't have as much snow to deal with as we did two winters ago, it could still cause you problems.
Snow acts like a sponge to soak up all of today’s rain.
According to Dave Miner, from Dave Miner Exterior Home Improvements, the rain-soaked snow on your roof could lead to ice dams, and potentially more damaging problems, especially if you have a lot more on one side of your roof than the other.
"We don't have the severe weight that we had two years ago YET, one of the big things we've got to watch out for is unevenness, weight distribution on the roofs. Some of these houses have no snow on one side and a lot of snow on the other sides and that should be a concern, people should get that weight to be distributed evenly." Said DAVE MINER.
He says unevenly distributed snow on your roof could lead to a tilted roof or collapse although right now we haven't had any reports of roof collapses.
Ice dams are the main threat to damage your roof right now.
If you're roof raking to clear snow, either rake the whole roof to get rid of the weight, or rake just the bottom foot or two off your roof.
If you're doing roof raking, it's best to rake with a partner and take frequent breaks.
