Wilbraham man critically hurt in head-on collision in Springfield

Victim trapped in wreckage for an hour

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A Wilbraham man was critically injured  in a head-on collision in Springfield Monday night.

Springfield Police Captain Cheryl Clapprood told 22News, "One car may have side-swiped another sending one of the vehicles into oncoming traffic at 1168 Plumtree Road in Springfield's Sixteen Acres section at about 7:35 PM New Years Eve."

Captain Clapprood told 22News one of the victims was trapped in one of the vehicles for an hour while rescue personnel worked to free him.  Captain Clapprood said the victim, a Wilbraham man in his 20's, suffered multiple serious injuries and was undergoing surgery and is in critical condition.

Two other victims, a man and a woman, both in their 20's were taken to the Baystate Medical Center Trauma Unit for treatment for less serious injuries, according to Clapprood.

The Accident Reconstruction Team was mobilized to investigate.
