SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Western Massachusetts Law Enforcement Officers worked at four restaurants to provide a boost for Special Olympics Friday night.
Officers, Troopers and sheriff's deputies joined the wait staffs at Mama Iguana's, Max's Tavern, Uno's Grill and the Student Prince Friday.
It's their annual "Tip-A-Cop" fundraiser in support of Special Olympics of Massachusetts. The money they raise allows athletes with intellectual challenges to compete in the Summer Games at Harvard Stadium.
Richard Pierce, a retired police officer and Special Olympics supporter, told 22News, "They really take it to heart. They take it very seriously. And to see the glow on their faces when they're awarded the medals at the end of the competition. It's just unbelievable!"
Richard Bashaw of Ludlow, a Special Olympics medal winner, added, "I feel good. So happy. Gold training. Everything's great. Love it. Perfect!"
More than 2,000 Special Athletes participate in the Summer Games at Harvard Stadium every June.
