Energy efficiency without the investment

AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) - Across Western Massachusetts there are hundreds of old homes that have been turned into multi-family units.

Many aren't energy efficient, which is a problem for tenants who pay their own utilities.

There are easy and cheap ways to cut down on the costs.

Bruce Drewniany, the manager of the Rocky’s Ace Hardware in Agawam, told 22News, “One of the easiest quickest ways is to shrink wrap your windows; the windows and doors are the two biggest heat loss areas in your home. You can probably do a whole apartment for about $20."

Lighting is another easy place to save energy.

While they're more expensive, switching to Energy Star light bulbs can save you about $65 a year.

Ken Fortune of West Springfield, told 22News, “You have to save all the money you can, you have to buy the good bulbs."

Here are some other tips:

  • Unplug your electronics
  • Take 10 minute showers
  • Keep furniture away from vents and radiators
  • Wash with cold water
  • Don't over dry your clothes

If there are bigger issues; consider talking to your landlord about making some improvements.

Often they can get tax breaks and other incentives to make those changes.
