SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Today we honor all of our service members who are either currently active or have fought in World War II or the Vietnam War.

Commemorations began with a parade at 11 o'clock.

The parade stepped off from Springfield Technical Community College, at the intersection of Federal and State Streets.

It ended at Springfield City Hall.

Local high school students participated in the parade.

Dozens of people and local veterans organizations attended the ceremony.

This year the holiday falls on a Sunday, so the federal observance will be on Monday.

This year also marks the first day honoring all the service men and women since the last US troops left Iraq in December.

Over in Boston, Governor Deval Patrick will attend the annual State House Veterans Day Ceremony.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno attended an event at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam.
