SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Veterans Day falls on a Sunday this year, and that is why many area colleges and schools elected to hold Veterans Day ceremonies on Friday.

American International College in Springfield held its annual Veterans Day observance in the morning hours on the campus quadrangle. Honored guests included AIC graduates and staff who have served in the military.

There was also a reading of a winning essay by AIC freshman Tyler Geffert about the contributions of veterans.

“Veterans day means a lot to me because every guy in my family except for me so far served in the Army,” Geffert said. “If I could not go in the army yet, I can pay my respects and try to write an essay.”

During Friday’s ceremony a wreath was also laid at the AIC Veterans Memorial.
