SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Seventy-one year-old George McKenzie was arraigned in Springfield District Court Tuesday afternoon on an animal cruelty charge stemming from the alleged beating of a hawk Tuesday morning.

According to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney, detectives saw McKenzie throw a piece of wood at the bird, and before they could get there to stop him, he had started stomping on the bird and beating it with a candlestick holder.

McKenzie pleaded not guilty during his arraignment. He was ordered held on $1,000 cash bail, and will be back in court on June 17.
