Voting on Springfield casino proposals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - It's still unclear how the voting process on the casino referendum, will go for residents living in Springfield. 

The Springfield City Council has not yet officially decided if there will be a city-wide vote, or a ward-only vote. It is trying to figure out if everyone living in the city should have a say, or whether the vote should just be limited to those who live near the proposed casino sites.

So far, the Springfield Casino Site Committee has held two public meetings in the South End and in Sixteen Acres. Residents in Sixteen Acres say they want a city-wide vote, but those living in the South End say they're opposed to that.

Ultimately, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission will have the final say on which casino is built in western Massachusetts.      

Here are a list of the casino companies still vying for a spot in western Massachusetts:

• Mohegan Sun - Palmer
• MGM - South End, Springfield
• Penn National - North End, Springfield
• Ameristar - off of Page Blvd., East Springfield

All of the casino companies have unveiled their plans to the public, except Ameristar. But the company is expected to do so next Tuesday.
