WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Westfield police officer killed in an accident while working a construction detail Thursday morning was a 27-year police veteran, Capt. Hipolito Nunez says.
The officer was struck by a dump truck while he was working an off-duty construction detail on Pontoosic Road Thursday morning, Nunez said. He was taken to Baystate Medical Center, where he died.
Such details are termed “off duty” because they are overtime jobs; not done as part of an officer’s normal shift.
Police officers are in mourning. A black memorial banner has been hung over police headquarters , and flags in Westfield are at half-staff.
The officer’s name has not yet been publicly revealed, pending the notification of his family. More information will be released during a news conference scheduled for 2:00 P.M. 22News will air the news conference live, and it will be streaming on WWLP.com and on your mobile devices.
