Difficult topic to discuss with children

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - Flags hang around the small town of Newtown, Connecticut that read "Hug a teacher today."

The shooting was a dreadful reminder of how important teachers are in protecting their children.

As students go back to school for the first time, should teachers discuss the shooting with students? Mark Felix of Sunderland answered, “I think they almost have to, it's in the air, people are talking about it. Just be careful they don't run with it farther than where the kids are at.”

There will probably be discussions about how to make sure children are as prepared as possible.

Greg Moss of Springfield said, “Just safety and probably evacuation routes for the school and how to react if there was a crisis situation.”

We know now that the gunman blasted his way into the building Friday to carry out the massacre.

We also know about the heroic acts by the teachers and other school administrators; some of which who lost their lives trying to protect the children.

Just as parents should do, some think children should be ensured they are safe at school despite this horrible tragedy. Brett Valcourt of Chicopee thinks it should be said, “Listen, this stuff does happen but it's not something you should be worried about, you're very well protected.”

Students of the Sandy Hook Elementary school are expected to resume class on Wednesday but at a different location.
