WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Health professionals are urging you get your flu shot if you haven’t this year.

Hospitals and urgent care centers are seeing a rush of patients with flu-like symptoms and a rush of people trying to get the vaccine.

Dr Jessica Biggie at Doctors Express said, “If people start getting the flu shot even now we should see some of the numbers come down. I think the flu tends to last anywhere from 7-14 days people who get the flu are really sick and they know it.”

Many patients at the Doctors Express haven't gotten around to getting the shot even though they understand the importance. “Definitely so they don't get sick, it is important. I'm just a procrastinator,” said Kasey of East Windsor, Connecticut.

For those who don't like the idea of a shot there are other forms of the vaccine as well. There's a nasal spray and new shot that is 90% smaller than the regular one.

And for those who think they'll get the flu because of the shot that's not the case.

“What I hear a lot from people is they don’t' want to get the flu from the flu shot and what I tell them is we've done studies on hundreds of thousands of people and there is no correlation between getting the flu and getting the flu shot,” said Dr. Biggie.

Some pharmacies will not give children flu shots so you should check with them before you go there. For a link to a vaccine near you click here .
